On Wednesday, October 12, fourteen people were injured in a chain reaction car accident on southbound Interstate 55 involving 18 vehicles in St. Louis.
According to authorities the accident happened at around 3.15 p.m. between Gasconade Street and the 4500 block of South Broadway on the southbound Interstate. It appears that there was mist in the air from rainfall, and that visibility was suddenly gone when the sun came out and hit the mist. Then followed a chain reaction with 18 vehicles crashing into each other.
According to the St. Louis Fire Department there were 35 medical and fire personnel who attended the scene, with seven people being taken to hospital in a stable condition but two more were critical. Five people were treated at the scene for their injuries.
Following the major crash the interstate was closed southbound causing significant traffic delays and back up on the adjoining roads.
Police are working to determine the cause, and at this time they are unsure if it was weather related.
